There are many times when I need to create working drawings for fabrication purposes. Working Drawings are complete drawings with all the necessary information to create the part or assembly. I use the combination (if necessary) of several AutoDesk software programs including AutoCAD, Inventor, Civil 3D for the design. Depending on the projects need, I will sometimes also go into additional programs like 3ds Max for additional testing and rendering purposes. Designing the project in 3D allows the client to better visualize the design and allows the designer to test for clearances and interferences between parts. 2D working drawings can be created based on the 3D design but it is not uncommon for manufacturers to skip the drawing plans and ask for the digital files directly for use in their CNC (computer numerical control) machines.
